New Nutrition Labels Best Practices & Rules in 2020

More than ever, there is the importance of keeping the ingredients of your products transparent. That is why the new nutrition label rules in 2020 have changed.

People are now carefully looking at every label of their supplements they buy to ensure it is the right supplement for them.

From a manufacturer’s point of view, make sure always to use the best sources of ingredients possible to be able to deliver the best product viable, along with the best nutrients.

The New Nutrition Facts Label

When it comes to learning more about the new nutrition facts label, keep in mind that its primary goal is to reflect updated scientific information such as the link between diet and chronic diseases like obesity and heart disease.

The new label has a goal of making it easier for you and your potential buyers to make more informed food choices.

The United States Food and Drug Administration, or FDA for short, has updated the Nutrition Facts label on packaged foods and drinks and is requiring changes based on updated scientific information, new nutrition research, and public input.

This means that the label is being updated on such a large scale for the first time in over 20 years. The refreshed design and updated information should make it easier for anyone to make much more informed food choices that can contribute to lifelong healthy eating habits.

About the Education Campaign

Back in 2018, the FDA had announced the Nutrition Innovation Strategy, which set a strategic course for taking action in reducing and preventing death and disease related to poor nutrition.

As part of this strategy, the new campaign supported customer education as a key element in the FDA’s ongoing public health efforts.

You have probably noticed the new nutrition facts label with the quote, “What’s in it for you?”.

This is the new educational campaign developed by the FDA to raise awareness about the changes in the nutrition facts label and increase its use to hopefully help customers and health care professionals and educators, learn more about how to use it as a tool for maintaining healthy dietary practices.

The education campaign includes outreach through various channels such as social media, real-world advertising, educational videos, and downloadable materials that anyone can get.

The Differences

When it comes to the differences, you are looking at quite a few new things.

Servings, such as a larger and border type, serving sizes are also updated, calories: larger type, updated daily values, New: added sugars, actual amounts declared, change in nutrients required, and a new footnote.

The serving sizes have corresponded to what people effectively eat and not what people should eat; thus, the portions have been re-thought.

Packaging affects the serving as-well, with whom different sizes can equal one serving.

You may have noticed that many people drink 12- or 20-ounce bottles in one sitting. As such, they have been updated to equal one serving.

The new changes in the label’s look focus mainly on the format on certain nutritional facts such as:

The increased type size of Calories, servings per container, and serving size.

The bold font in the number of calories and serving size declaration.

It is important to note that the label should mention the actual amount of Vitamin D, calcium, iron, potassium, and daily value.

When it comes to the other vitamins and minerals, the manufacturers can declare them voluntarily.

There is also an update to the nutrition science information, and now they need to include added sugars in grams as a percent daily value.

Based on scientific evidence, the FDA has reviewed daily values of nutrients regarding sodium, dietary fiber, and vitamin D. People can understand their nutrition information when considering their total daily diet.

The serving size will correspond to what people eat and not what people should it when it comes to the updated serving and packaging sizes.

As such, the portions have been re-thought based on the research of what people eat within the United States.

Per Serving or Per Package on current packages, such as calories and nutrition information, are shown “per serving” only.

The new nutrition fact labels require a per package or per unit fact label column to be added for larger than a single serving product.

The Goal

The goal of this new nutrition label for 2020 is to inform people about what they are consuming and at what quantity in both the food they eat and the drinks they decide to drink and hopefully live a healthier and happier life with proper nutrition and a diet plan that works for them.

Manufacturers have until January of 2020 to January of 2021, depending on their annual food sales, to comply with the new nutrition facts label.

This added pressure should keep both companies and consumers happy as the more we know about what we consume and the more we are educated on how it affects our bodies and lives as a whole, the more we can pay close attention and take control over our diet to live a longer and happier life.

The next time you decide to buy packaged goods from the grocery store, you should pay close attention to the new labels and learn exactly what is within the food or drink you will consume. Inform yourself online or through other mediums about what is best for your body and daily activity and always consume enough for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By maintaining a healthy diet, you will live a longer and happier life.
