Fish Oil Manufacturing Process

Fish oil is one of the most popular omega-3 supplements on the market. The oil is most commonly extracted using a wet pressing method, which separates the oil from the fish in three main stages.

Fish Heating

The process of extracting oil starts with heating the fish, which separates the water and oils from the protein. Fish longer than roughly 16 inches can skip this step, and certain fish require extra handling before processing.

Liquid Extraction

With the fish heated and the oil ready to be extracted, the fish are loaded into a large pressing machine that holds a high volume at once. The press separates the oil and water from the solids. Centrifugation can optionally be used to accelerate the separation and produce a purer batch.

Refinement

With the oil separated from the water, the last crucial step to securing the omega-3 fish oil is refining it to be pure. Hot water is used to extract impurities and prepare the oil for storage and encapsulation.
