Custom Glucosamine Manufacturing
Glucosamine can be used in a variety of supplements. It has many distinct traits that set it apart from other ingredients. SMP Nutra is capable of manufacturing any type of nutraceutical formula that includes glucosamine.
Sources of Glucosamine
Manufacturing glucosamine starts with securing the amino sugar from its natural sources.
Glucosamine is made from chitin, an ingredient found in the shells of different shellfish that include crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. However, in recent years there has been a significant increase in demand for vegetarian supplements. To meet that requirement, Aspergillus niger, a type of fungus, is used by manufacturers. Fermented corn is another method used to create glucosamine supplements. Scientists have also successfully introduced a laboratory-based process for creating this supplement in synthetic form.

The Types of Glucosamine
Glucosamine is regarded as an amino sugar and is a very abundant monosaccharide.
Glucosamine is commonly used in supplements for increasing cartilage in the body. Cartilage is essential for keeping joints healthy, and scientific evidence shows that glucosamine is an effective treatment for joint-related issues. The production process involved in creating glucosamine-based capsules is provided here.
- Glucosamine sulfate
- Glucosamine hydrochloride
- N-acetylglucosamine
What is Glucosamine Sulfate?
Glucosamine sulfate has some distinct differences from other types of glucosamine.
Glucosamine sulfate is the most common form of glucosamine. It can be harvested from the shells of shellfish or made synthetically. Before being used in supplements, the glucosamine sulfate must be stabilized. This is commonly done with sodium chloride.
The "sulfate" is a form of sulfur. This is what can really help certain ailments. A different type of sulfur can be added, known as sulfa, but this is not the same as sulfate, so it will render different effects in a supplement.

Glucosamine Hydrochloride
Glucosamine hydrochloride is the less common form of glucosamine.
Similarly to glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride is found in the shells of shellfish. On the other hand, this form has no sulfur and is commonly found to contain chondroitin instead. Being less desirable, it is not commonly made synthetically.
The effects of this form of glucosamine differ but are backed by fewer studies. It is still used in supplements at times, but glucosamine sulfate is the better choice in most cases.

N-Acetylglucosamine
N-acetylglucosamine is the least common form of glucosamine used in supplements.
N-acetylglucosamine is an amide derivative of the monosaccharide glucose. To put it more simply, it is a sugar that is synthetically made and procured.
It is believed to have similar effects to the aforementioned forms of glucosamine, but it is not the same chemically.
