Sources of Glucosamine
Manufacturing glucosamine must start with securing the amino sugar from its natural sources.
Glucosamine is made from chitin, an ingredient found in the shells of different shellfish that include crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. However, in recent years, there has been a significant increase in demand for creating vegetarian supplements. To meet that requirement, Aspergillus niger, which is a type of fungus, is being used by manufacturers. Fermented corn is also another method used to create glucosamine supplements. Scientists have also successfully introduced a laboratory-based process for creating this supplement in synthetic form.
