What Are Liposomal Supplements?

With constant advancements in technology and the health industry, the birth of liposomal supplements was able to occur.

These liposomal supplements are different then typical supplements. What makes them special is they are made in a way that stores the compounds of the active ingredients in very small fat-like particles known as phospholipids.

This type of supplement can be made for a myriad of reasons. Some reasons may include:

To manufacture this highly advanced form of supplement, it takes a very specific process.

The process required to produce liposomal supplements is a highly meticulous process. Creating these cells and then stabilizing them is lengthy process and one that can be messed up with the slightest mess up.

Creating Liposomes

The most important part of the supplement, creating the liposomes is a necessary task that is tricky.

To create these liposomes, a process that includes heavy physical interaction is needed. First, dissolving the raw lipids in ethanol is done, then they need some form of heavy pressure to form a particle. This can be done by a heavy duty water nozzle that pushes out more than 1700 pounds per square inch. The amount of pressure applied will vary, depending on how large the liposome particles should be. The size of the particle is dependent on the location of the body that is targeted.

Purifying Liposomal Solution

With the liposomes made, they now must be cured of all ailment and unwanted compounds in them.

The batch of liposomes are now made. But they are not pure of all ailments and unwanted compounds, so they must be cleansed so they can be used in a supplement. Some of the potential unwanted compounds in them can include ethanol, salts, and any of the other chemicals added when creating the liposome.

To rid flush out these unwanted traits, a selective filtration system will be used that will shrink the particle sizes and dissolved compounds. A system called tangential flow filtration (TFF) is generally used.

How Are Liposomes Stabilized?

Creating the liposomal supplement will require the stabilization of the particles to ensure the desired results are achieved.

The stabilization step for the liposomes involves the dilution of the solution. This is done with WFI, which stands for “water for injection”. This is followed by a process of bioburden filtration. The result is now a solution that is made to the specific needs desired along with being pure and including only the necessary compounds.

What Is API Loading?

API loading is a term you may not have heard of before. It is vital to the process of liposome production.

Leading up to this step, the liposomes have been created and are ready to be used for supplements. The structure of the particle is a an empty core that is surrounded by a protective shielding of small circular cells.

API loading is the process of injecting the active ingredients directly into the empty core. This is the most complex part, but it is the most crucial.

Product Stabilization

Stabilizing the ingredient-filled liposome is crucial as it can be imperative to the efficacy of the product.

With the liposomes filled with the correct active ingredient, it must be stabilized again to ensure it is made correctly. This can be done by undergoing another TFF process to rid the final particle of an non-liposomal material.

The lengthy process of creating a liposomal supplement is tricky and complicated. But is can be a very effective form of supplement.
